a public service by Evan Bozarth
yeah, yeah, i know- Zuckerberg’s an evil douche and his big bad facebook is wrong for making our personal data public by default…i agree…
BUT, you still have the power to lock YOUR shit down..they’re pretty robust controls too…
Start by editing your friends list: segment them into new sub-lists: trusted, untrusted, family, work, etc -keeping in mind certain access levels for each list…this may take a while, but its worth it.
then go to privacy settings and on each feature - the pull down - choose custom access > you’ll be able to enter just those specific “trusted” lists for access to most everything…
and here’s a common one thats overlooked:
its the old problem of when a friend uploads a photo of YOU doing something really stupid, of course…Maybe you don’t want your boss or your mom finding those “tagged” photos of YOU…just go to “Privacy Settings > Friends, Tags and Connections > photos of me” and choose a custom access list or even “exclude” certain people (sorry mom) for that specific feature…easy.
also - be sure to find the “what your friends can share about you” tab (in Privacy > applications & websites) and uncheck everything…now when one of your friends clicks a “like” button on another website - they won’t be selling your info down the river…
One last thing - on the same “Application & websites” panel, at the bottom is their new “Instant Personalization Pilot Program” tab…there’s only 1 checkbox on the page - uncheck it. Simple. ok..
that’s a start…all this will take time - but its necessary- its for your protection.
your welcome.
